Stephen Boss

I began making letterforms as a child. I liked drawing letters. When time  for college arrived, I decided upon a graphics major at the Center for Creative Studies, Detroit, and was fortunate to have Richard Isbell as my type instructor. Isbell is known for his font Turnpike, the standard for all highway signage in the USA.

Today, I am living and working in North Adams. I create assemblage and  cultivating Venus Fly Traps is a hobby of mine.

I’ve consulted on design projects for Fairchild, JP Morgan Chase, Bumble & bumble and Osh Kosh, creating custom fonts, magazine layouts.

I have taught intensive classes at SVA, NYC; and in Kolding, Denmark Design Skol.

My work was exhibited in Seybold’s New Type Gallery, a show which travelled from NYC to ATypI in England, the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague, and finally to Harvard where it is archived. Work was featured in Japan’s Timing Zero, Publish Magazine and Mass HiTech. I am listed in the Designer Database of the Klingspor Museum in Offenbach, Germany.
My recent book, Digital Type Design for Branding is sold internationally and is carried by Europe’s oldest bookstore, The Athenaeum in Amsterdam. I also coauthored the New Web Typography, a handbook and reference book for web design.

I worked first in engineering field as draftsman, then in the exhibit world, having been headhunted due to my board skills. Working for the Production Company for many years on projects for GEPlastics, Owens Corning, Peugeot of America, VW, etc., I made drawings and built models of exhibits, some as large as a football field, in the case of GEPlastics.
I have made hats since the age of 12, and had a hat shop in Gloucester, Massachusetts for 10 years. I continue to make hats and sculpture in the studio.
